    The City of Burlington is seeking an experienced and motivated Golf Course Grounds Superintendent to lead all turf management, maintenance operations, and agronomic care at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course. This senior leadership role is responsible for delivering exceptional playing conditions year-round while managing staff, budgets, and environmental compliance.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Manages and participates in the overall day-to-day operations of the grounds and equipment at the Flint Hills Golf Course (FHGC) in a manner consistent with the budget.
    • Develop and execute comprehensive turf management programs for greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and practice areas. Manage tree care, plants and shrubs, landscaping, bunker, cart paths, and water features.
    • Manage irrigation systems, fertilization, aeration, overseeding, and integrated pest management programs.
    • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate all seasonal and part-time grounds maintenance staff.
    • Manage the annual grounds maintenance budget; monitor expenditures and develop capital improvement proposals; ensure operations occur in a cost-effective manner.
    • Oversee and lead maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment and the maintenance facility.
    • Ensure full compliance with all environmental regulations and maintain Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator licensing. Maintain records, permits, and documentation related to applications and compliance.
    • Coordinate course setup and maintenance scheduling with golf operations/clubhouse staff.
    • Works closely with the Recreation/Golf Course Manager. Ensures overall facility is well maintained.
    • Communicate with City staff and the public in a professional manner.
    • Supports and enforces all City and FHGC policies, standards and procedures.
    • Ensures full compliance with all state, county and local regulations and standards.
    • Regular and punctual attendance. Represents the City in a responsible, professional and trustworthy manner.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Minimum 4 years of turfgrass maintenance experience; minimum 2 years in a supervisory role
    • Strong knowledge of Midwest turf management, irrigation systems, and golf course equipment preferred.
    • Prior municipal or public-sector experience is considered.
    • High school diploma/GED required. Bachelor's degree in Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred; relevant experience considered.
    • Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator License required (or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire)
    • GCSAA Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) designation preferred
    • Valid driver's license. Must live in Des Moines, Lee, Henry, or Louisa counties in Iowa or in Henderson or Hancock counties in Illinois.
    • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen and physical.

    SALARY

    Starting $62,389+ DOQ, with full benefit package.

    • Extensive knowledge of turfgrass science, irrigation systems, water management, and construction principles.
    • Valid Iowa Pesticide Applicator certification
    • Strong communication, financial management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Knowledge and passion for the game of golf.

    Special Requirements

    • Must have or be able to obtain a current Iowa Driver's License
    • Must have or be able to obtain a Iowa Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some overtime, weekends and some holidays.

    • Familiarity with golf course equipment and safe operation.
    • Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain state pesticide applicator license.
    • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform hands-on physical labor.
    • Extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, and operating machinery.

    Echo Valley was founded in 1969 by Ed Coppola. Throughout the 56 years the Club has continued to be owned and operated by the Coppola family. This new hire will only be the 5th superintendent in the history of the Club. The 27-hole Larry Packard/Rick Robbins design course includes the original Vale/Creek courses and Ridge nine. In 2002 Rick Robbins designed the Ridge nine which is regarded by many as the best 9 holes in the state of Iowa. Robbins has been back a number of times since 2002 working on different renovations. Since 2020 there have been a number of significant projects including; cap con bunkers throughout all the courses, new irrigation on the Creek and a new pump station, XGD on the Vale & Creek greens, new green surrounds on the Creek, new greens on the Vale, extensive tree and drainage work, massive upgrades on equipment, and much more.

    This position will require high energy, enthusiasm, problem solving, technology skills, and most importantly a passion for the game. They will report to ownership and management in developing both short-term and long-term planning.

    Education Requirements:
