    THE GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT IS A KEY MEMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT TEAM.     Job Title: Grounds Superintendent
    Location: New Hampton Golf and Country Club – New Hampton, Iowa
    Position Type: Full-Time
    Reports To: Board of Directors / Grounds Liaison

    Position Overview

    New Hampton Golf and Country Club is seeking a knowledgeable and hands-on Grounds Superintendent to oversee turf maintenance and grounds care for our nine-hole golf course. This position is vital to ensuring high-quality playing conditions, managing the grounds team, and preserving the overall beauty and environmental health of our course and facilities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Plan, supervise, and participate in the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, practice areas, and surrounding grounds.
    • Develop and implement turf management programs (mowing, irrigation, fertilization, aeration, pest/weed control).
    • Operate, maintain, and repair groundskeeping equipment and irrigation systems.
    • Monitor course conditions and adjust practices to maintain optimal turf health and playability.
    • Prepare and manage annual budgets and capital improvement plans with the Board.
    • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal/grounds staff.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and safety standards (pesticides, water usage, equipment handling).
    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, and equipment servicing.
    • Collaborate with management on course improvements, tournament prep, and long-term planning.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; degree or certification in Turf Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field preferred.
    • 3+ years of golf course maintenance experience; supervisory experience preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of turfgrasses, irrigation systems, and pest/disease management.
    • Familiarity with golf course equipment and safe operation.
    • Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain state pesticide applicator license.
    • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform hands-on physical labor.
    • Extended periods of walking, bending, kneeling, and operating machinery.

    Echo Valley was founded in 1969 by Ed Coppola. Throughout the 56 years the Club has continued to be owned and operated by the Coppola family. This new hire will only be the 5th superintendent in the history of the Club. The 27-hole Larry Packard/Rick Robbins design course includes the original Vale/Creek courses and Ridge nine. In 2002 Rick Robbins designed the Ridge nine which is regarded by many as the best 9 holes in the state of Iowa. Robbins has been back a number of times since 2002 working on different renovations. Since 2020 there have been a number of significant projects including; cap con bunkers throughout all the courses, new irrigation on the Creek and a new pump station, XGD on the Vale & Creek greens, new green surrounds on the Creek, new greens on the Vale, extensive tree and drainage work, massive upgrades on equipment, and much more.

    This position will require high energy, enthusiasm, problem solving, technology skills, and most importantly a passion for the game. They will report to ownership and management in developing both short-term and long-term planning.

    Education Requirements:

    The Des Moines Golf & Country Club is a prominent golf and country club located in West Des Moines, Iowa. It is known for its high-quality golf courses, elegant amenities, and rich history in the local community. The Des Moines Golf & Country Club was founded in 1897 and has since grown into one of the premier golf and social clubs in the region. The Club was established to provide a private, upscale environment for golf enthusiasts and their families. The Club is renowned for its two Pete Dye championship golf courses, the South Course and North Course, each with its own unique and demanding layouts.

    The North Course Superintendent works in conjunction with the South Course Superintendent to aid the Director of Grounds in the leadership and execution of work schedules and maintenance programs of 36 golf holes, two practice facilities, and clubhouse grounds.

    Job Description:

    • We are looking for individuals with a positive attitude that enjoy working outside with people.
    • This position is given the empowerment to make their own decisions and operate the North course to achieve the expected playing conditions
    • Establishes and executes weekly agronomic plans together with the Director of Grounds.
    • Schedules, trains, and leads a course crew of 18-20 seasonal staff members, 2 assistant superintendents, and seasonal interns.
    • Maintains accurate chemical and employee records for their respective staff members.
    • Develops and implements the chemical and fertilizer plan to the North Course golf course with insight from the Director of Grounds.
    • Responsible for maintaining course playing conditions outlined by the club maintenance standards.
    • Inspects the golf course regularly to evaluate and recommend course improvements.
    • Oversees all construction, maintenance, and renovations on the golf course.
    • Oversees repairs of broken water lines or valves and may perform necessary repairs in an emergency.
    • Oversees the labor budget with the South course superintendent; makes adjustments when needed to stay within budget goals.
    • Assists the Director of Grounds in preparation of the annual operating and capital budget for the department.
    • Meets monthly with the Greens and Golf Committee to ensure expectations are being met.
    • Works with the Head Golf Professionals to discuss maintenance plans and scheduled golf events.
    • Coordinates applicable work with outside contractors.
    • Assists with snow removal.

    Educational Requirements

    • Bachelor's, Associate Degree, or Certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant/Turf Science or related field of study preferred.

    Experience Requirements

    • 3 - 5 years working on a golf course or similar field.
    • General knowledge of irrigation maintenance/repairs.
    • Strong work ethic and personal commitment to improving/maintaining course conditions.

    Special Requirements

    • Must have or be able to obtain a current Iowa Driver's License.
    • Must have or be able to obtain a Iowa Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.
    • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes some overtime, weekends and some holidays.
