    Landscape Maintenance Worker III / 2nd Assistant Superintendent / Spray Technician

    Acts as the 2nd Assistant Golf Course Superintendent / Spray Technician / Irrigation Technician. Performs semi-skilled maintenance work in the care and upkeep of the golf grounds at Heritage Oaks Golf Club and Anetsberger Golf Course. Performs routine golf maintenance work with an emphasis on plant protectant applications and irrigation maintenance. May be assigned day-to-day task oversight of seasonal maintenance crew members with direction from supervisor. May be asked to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, early mornings and overtime as necessary.

    Pay: $22.00+ per hour with FREE health benefits. Opportunity for overtime.

    Starting Date: No earlier than 2/6/2023

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Perform operation of application equipment for plant protectants and fertilizers including proper equipment care and calibration techniques.
    Perform operational maintenance and repair for golf course irritation systems.
    Perform general golf course grounds maintenance and repair work based as assignment; mowing, planting, cultivating and watering grass, trees, flowers and shrubs; changing cups, repairing ball washers, raking bunkers and cultural practices.
    Inspects course grounds for the identification of weeds, diseases, and insects; and ensures corrective action is taken as needed; reports any potential hazard to supervisor, staff and/or the public.
    Operates mowers, tractors and other specialized grounds maintenance equipment in addition to backhoes, skid loaders, trenchers and trailers.
    Performs general grounds maintenance activities such as ornamental planting and maintenance, tree care/removals and drainage installation/maintenance.
    Train seasonal workers in proper maintenance and equipment procedures.
    Assist in determining materials and supplies needed for projects; ensures necessary materials and supplies are gathered and/or purchased.
    Perform snow removal including plowing, snow blowing, shoveling, and salting of walkways and parking lots.
    Assist with equipment repair and facility maintenance at the golf course during off-season.
    Report any work-related or patron injuries, incidents or unsafe conditions to supervisor; address unsafe conditions as appropriate; complete or review incident/accident report forms as needed.
    Foster and maintain effective professional working relationships with the general public and co-workers.
    Perform all job tasks in a safe manner.
    Perform related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    • Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent, including two (2) year of experience in one of the following areas: general grounds maintenance, horticulture; nursery work.
    • Irrigation system operation/troubleshooting/repair
    • Tools, materials, methods and procedures used in golf maintenance
    • Methods, materials and tools used in the maintenance of golf grounds
    • Possession of a valid Illinois Drivers License Class D
    • Operate tractors, skid-steer, truck and trailer combination and other equipment
    • Midwest plant identification; identify diseases, pests and infestations
    • Recordkeeping
    • Work independently and efficiently without direct supervision
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Become CPR and AED certified at or after hire
    • Possession of an Illinois Public Pesticide Operators License or ability to obtain with three (3) months of hire

    Course Information

    This is a unique opportunity to working for the Northbrook Park District managing multiple golf courses. This position will have responsibilities at Heritage Oaks Golf Club and Anetsberger Golf Course. Heritage Oaks, formerly Sportsmans Country Club, has a long history in Northbrook of providing exceptional public golf. In August of 2021 the 27 hole facility was reopened after a 18 month renovate and rebranding. The renovations included new clubhouse, fully revamped range, drainage improvements, reconstruction of the Classic 18 push up greens, addition of new forward tees, and complete re-grass of greens, tees, and fairways with 007. Anetsberger Golf Course is a nine-hole Par three course that is a hidden gem in Northbrook.

    Job Description:

    Chicago Highlands Club is a 12 year old private club in Westchester, IL located 15 miles from downtown Chicago.  The Arthur Hills designed golf course is a links style design built on 270 acres. The club boasts an 18-hole golf course, 3- hole junior course and practice facility with chipping greens, putting greens, and a driving range with multiple grass teeing areas. We are seeking a Head Technician that is ready to advance their career at one of Illinois' finest new private facilities.  Candidates should be focused, organized, and a dedicated teammate that will help us reach our goals as we assist them in reaching theirs.  Our team at Highlands looks to maintain high standards and work cohesively to ensure the best conditions for members and staff daily.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Diagnose and perform major and minor repairs as needed in a timely manner
    • Daily spot checks on equipment in the field to ensure performance
    • Perform routine scheduled maintenance
    • Order / manage parts inventory
    • Maintain detailed service records to include all repairs, service, and associated parts and costs for all equipment
    • Maintain a clean and organized work area

    Requirements:

    • 1-3 years experience with engine repair (small, diesel and gas)
    • Prior experience with golf course maintenance equipment helpful but not necessary (training available)
    • Must be able to troubleshoot issues with equipment, order parts, and repair 
    • Welding and fabrication 
    • Basic computer knowledge (Microsoft Office)
    • Needs organization skills for tools and parts inventory, machine records, purchasing, and preventative maintenance plan
    • Ability to follow instructions and work with staff and Superintendent
    • Understanding of prioritization of work that will streamline efficiency
    • Required to operate equipment and lift up to 50 lbs.

    Full Time Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000

     Handle ordering and purchasing of all parts and equipment.

     Organize and restructure the shop to create a clean, safe, and efficient working environment.

     Manage and monitor equipment and supplies budget of $75,000+.

     Work with the director of agronomy to develop annual operating and capital budgets. 

     Create an environment focused on teaching, training and cooperation.

     Maintain open lines of communication with the entire team.

    Educational Requirements

     Associates Degree or Certificate from an accredited technical school/college preferred, but not required

    Experience Requirements

     Technical experience

     Working knowledge of Hydraulic and Diesel systems 

     Working understanding of electrical systems and troubleshooting 

     Working knowledge of the principles, and fundamentals of reel/cutting unit management  

     Comfortable command of verbal, interpersonal & communication skills

     Ability to adapt to new technology and maintain a progressive fleet of equipment

     Possess a passion for the industry

     Great organizational skills and record keeping practices.
