    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Cedar Rapids Country Club is currently accepting resumes for the position of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.  In this position, the individual will work in a team environment to accomplish the goals set by the department. The Assistants position consist of training, directing and motivating employees, communicating with members, irrigation repair, fertilizer and pesticide application, equipment operation, water management and record keeping.  This is a learning position, so continued education is very important along with being motivated to advance in the profession.

    The Cedar Rapids Country Club was organized in 1904.  In 1915, the course was lengthened to 18 holes by Donald Ross.  In 2015, a course restoration was completed by Ron Prichard. Cedar Rapids Country Club was recently moved into Golf Weeks top 100 Classics at #92.  While the restoration is complete, there are still many improvements to make. In 2019, the club will host the 2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    The Assistant position is very demanding and will require working the hours necessary to accomplish the daily tasks.  Previous experience as an Assistant is preferred, but we will accept recent graduates. Candidates should have experience in pesticide/fertilizer applications, irrigation repair, training and managing employees, budget management and equipment operation.  The perfect candidate will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, great communication skills and be detail oriented.

    The Assistant position will have a highly competitive compensation package which include the following:

    Salary, possible housing, 401K, health/life insurance, golfing privileges, clothing allowance and expenses paid for state and national dues and conference.  Salary of $45,000-$55,000 DOE.

    Comments:
    Crow Valley Golf Club is the premiere golf club in the Quad Cities area and was founded in 1969 by an American professional golfer, Robert Nelson Fry, Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Lujack and several others. The club was originally intended to be a men’s only club and was designed specifically with the PGA tour in mind.

    Fry, who was instrumental in the development of golf in the Iowa and Illinois area, brought the Quad Cities Open (known today as the John Deere Classic) to Crow Valley Golf Club for the first three years. This tournament continues as an annual PGA Tour event in the Quad Cities area today.

    Crow Valley Golf Club is nestled in a natural setting that takes advantage of hundreds of stately trees, meandering Crow Creek and dramatic elevation changes providing breath-taking views. The championship 18-hole bent grass golf course was designed by John W. Cochran and the hitting range and short game area were recently renovated.     Overview

    The assistant golf course superintendent reports directly to the golf course superintendent. Under the superintendent's supervision, the assistant superintendent directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course greens, tees, fairways, and the entire property of Crow Valley Golf Club; supervises the maintenance and repair of motorized and other mechanical equipment; and does related work as required. The assistant superintendent may serve in the superintendent's capacity during his/her absence.

    Functions

    • Assists in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees and fairways; schedules work; and supervises the employees and the use of the equipment.
    • Instructs equipment operators on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment; supervises pesticide applications and/or operates and calibrates pesticide application equipment; and supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of pumps, and in the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.
    • Assists in personnel management and evaluation, employee safety and personnel discipline.
    • May modify the daily work schedule based on professional interpretation.
    • Attending educational seminars and industry trade shows to keep up with current best practices and help bring new ideas back to the club.
    • Any miscellaneous tasks assigned by the superintendent.

    Employment standard

    Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course tees, fairways and greens; seeding and maintenance practices for golf course turf; planting, cultivating, pruning, and caring for plants, shrubs and trees; characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage control methods; and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps and automatic controls.

    Ability to schedule and supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization of workers and equipment; prepare clear and concise reports; and maintain effective employee and public relations.

    • Self-motivated, independent thinker with a positive team-focused attitude
    • Knowledge and interest in the game of golf
    • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint
    • Possession of a valid driver's license.
    • Possession of current state licensing as a pesticide applicator.

    Special Requirements:

    • Applicants should have current or be able to obtain an Iowa Pesticide Applicator's Permit.

    Prairie Links Golf and Events Center is an 18-hole British-style links course located in Waverly, Iowa.  Each hole features five tee boxes with spacious fairways that are irrigated tee to green.  Playing surfaces are bluegrass tees and fairways and sand based L-93 putting greens that are built to USGA specifications. 

    Responsibilities

    • Supervises, trains and assists a crew in the routine maintenance of the golf course and clubhouse landscape

    Overview:
    The grounds assistant, under the supervision of the grounds supervisor performs work involving the use of various types of equipment used in the general maintenance  of  the  golf course.

    Functions:
    Manual labor including irrigation repair, equipment maintenance, cutting cups, tree trimming and removal, equipment operation, facility maintenance, snow removal, etc. Maintenance of all signs, hazard stakes, tee posts, etc.

    Employment Standards:

    • Knowledge of safe, efficient mechanical operation of tractors and other motorized equipment
    • Mechanical aptitude
    • Ability to follow oral and written directions
    • Possession of a valid drivers license
    • Must pass physical and drug screening
    • Must acquire a pesticide applicators license within 1 year

    During the peak season (March - November)
    Mon - Fri 7:00am - 3:30pm
    Sat & Sun 6:00am - 9:00am (average four weekend days per month)

    During the off season (December - February)

    Role:
