Position Overview:

Mapletøn Golf Club, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to play a key role in assisting in the grow-in and ongoing maintenance at a private golf club.

The Mapletøn Golf Club will be managed by Landscapes Unlimited and the vision is slightly different from that of the two private country clubs in Sioux Falls. It will be private but it will be golf only. Offering fine dining, and overnight lodging accommodations along with the world-class golf experience. Mapletøn Golf Club will provide an exclusive, but welcoming, comfortable, and fun atmosphere to its members and their guests.

Establishment of turf is priority and will transition to conditioning expectations at a very high level.

Job Summary:

This will be a great opportunity to be a part of the establishment of turf, develop expectations, and be a big part in establishing a culture of a golf maintenance department from the earliest stages.

 Essential Job Functions:

• Supervises the crews completing the maintenance and project work for the course.
• Assists with manual labor associated with the maintenance and project work as necessary.
• Instructs equipment operators and grounds maintenance personnel on the operation and care of mowing and other equipment.
• Supervises and participates in fertilizer, pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide applications and calibrates pesticide application equipment and maintains comprehensive records for applications.
• Participates in hiring and training of department staff on procedures and processes.
• Assists the Superintendent in providing staff with appropriate feedback and reviews on performance.
• Obtains and upholds pesticide and/or fertilizer license.
• Portrays positive attitude, professional manner and appearance in all situations.
• Complies with golf course etiquette rules.
• Must be well mannered, display a smile always, greet guests, member and fellow employees when encountered.
• Possess and understand the importance of safety and sees that safe operation procedures are observed in all daily activities.
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround time, streamline work processes and work cooperatively with others to provide quality customer service.
• Attends, runs and actively participates in regularly scheduled staff meetings.

Education and Experience:

• Two or four-year turf grass management degree or related field preferred. 
• Minimum two years’ experience in golf course maintenance crew preferably in a supervisory role. 
• Basic understanding of irrigation system operation/repair. 
• Previous fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide application/calibration experience preferred.
• Maintain pesticide applicators license

It is known for its high-quality golf courses, elegant amenities, and rich history in the local community. The Des Moines Golf & Country Club was founded in 1897 and has since grown into one of the premier golf and social clubs in the region. The Club was established to provide a private, upscale environment for golf enthusiasts and their families. The Club is renowned for its two-championship golf courses, the South Course and North Course, each with its own unique and demanding layouts.

The Assistant Superintendent aids the Golf Course Superintendent and the Director of Grounds in the leadership and execution of work schedules, maintenance programs and construction details. This person also helps direct the crew on the 18 holes that they are responsible for.

Daily Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assists in planning daily work schedules.
2. Assists 2nd assistant superintendent in the training of employees.
3. Assists in supervision of various construction projects.
4. Applies fertilizers and pesticides as needed.
5. Helps prepare the course setup for daily play.
6. Keeps informed on course starting times and special events.
7. Assists in snow removal.
8. Sets good examples for others to follow in job performance, work safety, equipment care, attendance and striving for efficiency.
9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Our assistants do get dirty during the workday. They help supervise but they also work on the golf course doing routine maintenance. Our assistants work every other weekend during the golf season. They average 125 - 150 hours of overtime per year.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor's or Associate Degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant/Turf Science or related field of study.

Experience Requirements

• Experience as Spray Technician or Crew Foreman is a bonus for this position.
• Knowledge of golf maintenance practices
• General knowledge of irrigation maintenance/repairs. Rainbird Cirrus is used.
• Must demonstrate initiative and moral character.
• Strong work ethic and personal commitment to improving/maintaining course conditions.

Special Requirements

Must have or be able to obtain a current Iowa Driver's License.
Must have or be able to obtain a Iowa Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.

Must be to work a flexible schedule that includes every other weekend and some holidays.

Position Summary

In collaboration with the golf course superintendent and other assistant superintendent, the assistant superintendent helps direct staff and participates in the maintenance and daily preparation of the golf course.

Essential Job Functions:

• Motivates and directs staff on a daily basis.

Education/Certificates/Licenses/Training

High School Diploma required. Higher Education degree in Turf Management, Agronomy or Horticulture preferred. Must obtain any required local and state licenses or certifications.

Experience/Background/Knowledge

Previous maintenance experience in golf operations required. A minimum of two years’ experience in the golf industry. Working knowledge of the maintenance of golf course greens, tees, and fairways.

Skills

Ability to communicate effectively with managers, guests and employees in one-on-one and small group situations in a fast-paced environment. Must be computer literate. Must be able to perform math computations essential for fertilizer and chemical calibrations, budgeting, and cost analysis purposes.
