    Course Description: Originally organized in 1897 as a private country club. Few, if any, private organizations have had a more turbulent history than the Des Moines Golf and Country Club, which has stubbornly fought its way through catastrophe, depression and the pains of progress to stand today on the threshold of its one-hundred and twenty first year. The Club is a strong, outstanding organization, loyally supported by its largest membership in history. In 1967 the club moved to its current location and hired Mr. Pete Dye to design and develop our 36-hole country club. In 2011 Mr. Dye and his associate architect Mr. Tim Liddy came back to DMGCC to do a master plan renovation which was completed in 2017. The club has hosted 2 record setting tournaments, the 1999 US Senior Open and the 2017 Solheim Cup.

    Philosophy: It is our goal to hire competent and professional staff members. When we hire for an assistant superintendent position, we hope to hire a turf professional who wants to work through our system to become a golf course superintendent on one of our championship courses. We have a great employment placement record for our superintendents.

    Role: Our assistants participate in all levels of our operation. You will learn every aspect of the golf course maintenance profession. You will be involved in the daily planning and implementation of our staff and their assignments. You will assist in personnel management, plant protectant applications, irrigation, drainage, assisting our equipment technician in the management of our fleet. You will attend industry and state educational functions to learn to network with your peers. Every day is different, and you will be involved in a very fast pace, professional environment.

    Requirement: It is our philosophy that all who come to work with us will learn how to manage in a professional private country club setting. We hire the person for their work ethic, we can teach and train you how to manage and be a team player in our system. You must possess a current Driver’s License. A minimum of a 2-year degree in turf management or related field. You must be able obtain an Iowa Pesticide License while employed with us.

You will work alternating weekends, so that you will be able to enjoy a healthy life/family balance with work. The club provides a meal each day for all its employees. You will have a membership paid in the Iowa GCSA and the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America. You will attend the State of Iowa GCSA Educational Conference. All uniforms and PPE will be provided to all employees. The club has a generous 401K plan that you can participate in for your future retirement. You will be allowed to golf on certain days and bring a guest if you like. If you elect to further your education, the club also has an employee scholarship fund that you can apply for.
