About Fairfield Golf and Country Club:
Fairfield Golf and Country Club, established in 1892, is the oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River. This historic 9-hole course is known for its beautifully maintained greens and welcoming atmosphere. Our facilities include a full-service restaurant, event space, and an outdoor swimming pool, making us a central hub for recreation and community events.

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the maintenance, care, and continuous improvement of our 9-hole golf course and surrounding grounds. The successful candidate will ensure the course is in top condition year-round, preserving its historic charm while enhancing playability and aesthetics. Reporting directly to the Club General Manager and the Board of Directors—specifically the Chairperson of the Golf Committee—the Superintendent will play a critical role in creating a superior experience for members and guests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Course Maintenance and Operations:
    • Oversee all turfgrass maintenance, landscape care, and groundskeeping for the golf course, clubhouse surroundings, and outdoor amenities.
    • Manage and implement agronomic programs, including fertilization, irrigation, seeding, and pest control to maintain optimal course conditions.
    • Monitor course conditions daily, ensuring high-quality greens, fairways, bunkers, and tees.
    • Maintain the irrigation system, making repairs as needed, and develop water management plans to support sustainability.
  • Staff Management:
    • Recruit, train, and supervise groundskeeping staff, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to standard.
    • Foster a team-oriented work environment with an emphasis on safety, accountability, and professional development.
    • Develop and manage staff schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage for seasonal needs and events.
  • Equipment and Budget Management:
    • Oversee the maintenance, repair, and inventory of all groundskeeping equipment.
    • Collaborate with the General Manager to develop and manage the annual maintenance budget, tracking expenses to remain within budgetary guidelines.
    • Recommend and procure supplies, tools, and equipment necessary for course upkeep.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with the Club General Manager, Golf Committee, and Board of Directors to provide regular updates on course conditions, ongoing projects, and future plans.
    • Coordinate with the Club's events team to prepare the course and grounds for tournaments, outings, and special events.
  • Compliance and Environmental Stewardship:
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding environmental practices, pesticide application, and worker safety.
    • Implement sustainable maintenance practices to minimize environmental impact and optimize resource efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field (preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent, or Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, or in a senior turf management role.
  • Experience with the maintenance of golf courses in varying climates, with a preference for knowledge of Midwestern growing conditions.
  • Expertise in irrigation systems, equipment maintenance, and modern agronomic practices.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with experience collaborating with club leadership or committees.
  • Familiarity with budgeting, expense tracking, and cost control.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Competitive salary - $65,000
  • Permanent, Part-time role, flexible schedule in winter months (mid-November-Mid-March
