    • Minimum education: Completion of 2-year turf management or related degree, or currently in school and pursuing such a degree.

      Desired experience: Experience working on a golf course, turf plot, in the agricultural industry.

      Hours per week: 40 hours with overtime possibilities.

      Pay Rate: $15 per hour.

      Primary Duties:

    • Assist in chemical application on course grounds.
    • Assist in the irrigation repair process course wide.
    • Perform various mowing tasks (mowing greens, tees, fairways, rough).
    • Operate heavy machinery to include tractors and various turfgrass equipment.
    • Calibrate walk spreaders to apply fertilizer on course grounds.
    • Perform daily course set-up tasks.
    • Engage in bunker maintenance on course grounds.
    • Interface and lead lower-level employees in the performance of team projects.
    • Collaborate with lead assistants and the superintendent to complete assignments.
    • Assist in tree removal on course grounds during winter months.

    The Intern position at Finkbine Golf Course is centered around assisting in all aspects of golf course maintenance. It’s an immersive, hands-on role where one day will be very different than the next. You will be watering greens, tees, and fairways and monitoring course conditions for moisture, completing fertilizer applications independently, performing course set-up, to mowing, equipment operation, irrigation repair and chemical spray applications.

    We ask that the Intern come with a positive attitude, willing to ask questions, and learn from the superintendent of course grounds and his two lead assistants. Our superintendents take an active approach to guiding, coaching, and leading employees. You will also have the opportunity to lead projects in the field, where lower-level workers will rely on you for leadership and the completion of assigned projects.

    While we are invested in our careers and our time at work, we also recognize the importance of a work-life balance. This position is set at 40 hours per week with overtime possibilities.

    Finkbine Golf Course is a Troon and University of Iowa property where there is a growing demand for an excellent turfgrass work product for its clientele. We expect you to be invested in the turfgrass management profession with the end-goal of becoming an Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.

    Spirit Hollow is located in Southeast Iowa, and it lays on a truly breathtaking property.  Spirit Hollow is a daily fee golf course and allows everyone to experience championship level conditions.  Ranked annually by both Golf Digest and Golfweek as one of the best courses in the state of Iowa. 

    Spirit Hollow is now accepting resumes for the 2022 summer season.  We our seeking individuals who are eager to learn all aspects of golf course maintenance.  Interns will work under the supervision of the golf course superintendent and will need to obtain an Iowa pesticide license.  Free housing and work shift lunches are provided.

    Interns will be a vital part of our team here at Spirit hollow and will gain valuable experience in:

    • Irrigation repair and operation
    • Pesticide and Fertilizer applications
    • Course Marking
    • Topdressing of greens, tees, and fairways
    • Aerification – core, solid, and venting
    • Managing small crews
    • Managing small project
    • Scouting and TDR use
    • Flower & Plant material management
    • All proper mowing practices

    Cross Training experience with other departments.  We will give you a snapshot of the golf operations, food & beverage, and hospitality departments.  This will be invaluable instruction that can give you advantages as you start your career.
