Golf Course Coordinator

  1. Description:


Under the general direction of the Head Golf Professional, assists in the planning and supervisory work for the care, maintenance, and development of grounds and equipment associated with Brown Deer Golf Course in a manner which addresses community needs and makes effective use of community resources while maximizing revenue. In the event of extended absence of Head Golf Professional, acts as Superintendent.  Directly performs maintenance and associated tasks as needed.  Under direction of Head Golf Professional assists Parks and Building Maintenance Superintendent with special projects during off season.

Directly responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all grounds and equipment associated with Brown Deer Golf Course.  These duties include but are not limited to: grounds care, irrigation repair, tree care, flower bed planting and maintenance, repair and maintenance of all golf course equipment, wetlands restoration, fountain maintenance, special event set-up and clean-up, and snow removal.


II.            General Duties


A.      Administration

  1. Assists Head Golf Professional in the development, planning, and implementation of maintenance program for Brown Deer Golf Course through the golf division staff.
  2. Assists in supervision all golf course grounds maintenance related contractors including tree care, landscaping and horticultural care contractors.
  3. Responsible for snow removal of Brown Deer entrances, parking lots, sidewalks, and designated City-owned sidewalks and trails.


B.      Staff

  1. Works to ensure a high level of communication with all golf maintenance staff members in terms of projects, programs and policies through staff meetings, e-mail, individual meetings and other written communications.
  2. Assists in supervising, planning, and coordinating work activities of all full-time and part-time employees within the golf maintenance division
  3. Assists in supervising training of all full-time, part-time, and seasonal golf maintenance employees; ensures proper safety, technical, and customer service standards
  4. Recruits, selects, and recommends to Head Golf Professional for employment of part-time department personnel and keeps appropriate records.
  5. Evaluates the performance of part-time golf maintenance staff to the Director.




C.      Finances

  1. Identifies, prepares, and justifies annual budget requests for projects and equipment needs as directed by the Head Golf Professional.
  2. Monitors budget print outs of all golf maintenance related expenses and revenues and reports irregularities
  3. Processes invoices to be turned into the City Accounts Payable Department.


III.                Qualifications:


A.      Education/Training/Experience

  1. Associates Degree in Agronomy and/or Turf Grass Management, Horticulture or a closely related field. 
  2. Three (3) years experience in golf course operations as a crew chief/supervisor.
  3. A combination of education and experience to the satisfaction of the City of Coralville may be substituted for the proceeding two qualifications.


B.      Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of: golf course turf culture, including the propagation, planting, cultivation, watering, and care of grasses, plants, and trees; plant diseases, pests, and chemicals and methods of control; considerable working knowledge of modern irrigation techniques and theories; considerable knowledge of golf course landscaping and maintenance operations; thorough knowledge of and ability to use golf course maintenance tools, chemicals, materials, equipment, and fixtures; comprehensive knowledge and ability to repair and maintain golf course equipment; building trades such as welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical (operation of maintenance of heating and cooling systems) and cement work; grounds care such as mowing, planting, landscaping, grading, construction, and pond care. 
  2. Ability to operate machinery; perform technical and manual tasks; maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people and groups; effectively delegate and supervise work crews; set priorities to deal with emergency needs; supervise and coordinate activities of a complex organization.
  3. Ability to: solve problems; handle sensitive public and department contracts; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; develops a team of full-time golf course maintenance personnel; evaluates work performance of full-time golf course maintenance personnel.
  4. Computer Skills: ability to learn and operate e-mail, internet search engines, word processing and spreadsheet applications (Microsoft products are currently used by the City of Coralville), and job related software.
  5. Other; integrity; attention to detail; tact; diplomacy and politeness; management of multiple priorities.


C.      Licenses and/or Status

  1. Possession of a valid State of Iowa Driver’s License.
  2. Possession of a valid State of Iowa Pesticide Applicator’s License.


IV.          Essential Job Functions:

  1. Ability to read, speak, write, hear, and understand English effectively to communicate with citizens and employees by telephone, e-mail, in writing and face to face.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public.
  3. Physical ability to traverse variable terrain conditions not accessible by vehicle including but not limited to steep slopes, unleveled grades, and heavily vegetated areas for the purpose of completing maintenance tasks on the golf course and associated areas.
  4. Ability to visually review program areas and the work of staff.
  5. Ability to perform record keeping and mathematics as necessary.
  6. Ability to operate motor vehicle.
  7. Ability to make repairs on windows, doors, blinds, light fixtures, walls, floors, furniture, and equipment.
  8. Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the employee to wear and use personal protective equipment for chemical application, enter and exit vehicles, work in cramped spaces, transport supplies and material and operate a variety of tools used in the park, facility, and building construction and maintenance activities.
  9. Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace or citizens encountered during work.
  10. Intellectual ability, judgement, stamina, and coordination necessary to normally complete daily assigned tasks within the workday.
  11. Ability to life and carry 50 pounds for various department needs and including equipment.
  12. Ability to repetitively bend and stoop to operate equipment in conjunction with park maintenance activities.
  13. Ability to walk long distances for inspection of course and supervision of staff.
